Why does Windows have so many viruses?
So it seems that everyday there is a new virus for Windows, or some new secutiy issue that I have to worry about. Why is this so, is it just because windows sucks or what?

Windows controlls 90-95% market share. Viruses are written for several reasons, including:
a) Ego: if you are a script kiddie, socially maladujsted sort who gets your kicks from virus writing, then you want to infect/cause as much havoc as possible, so you want to go for the most widespread OS.
b) Financial gain: criminals and dodgy advertisers (pretty much the same thing :) - want to infect as many PCs with their spyware/crapware as possible. The more you can spread, the more $$$ you can earn.
c) Lastly... Windows itself. While Microsoft got their act together, they were initially very slack with security. This meant there was a lot of holes in their operating systems. Since Windows XP Service Pack 2, things have got a lot better, but it used to be so easy to root a windows box it wasn't funny.
Basically, if Mac OS X, Linux or BSD had the market share of Windows, you would suddenly see a lot more viruses for those platforms. The more widespread you are the bigger a target you are. Hope this helps.
