Seconding Ubuntu for n00bs... also other popular distros are SuSue and Fedora.
If you want to get into commercial stuff, Red Hat Enterprise is used widely in data centres. I personally don't like it but it has good support (if you pay for it).

Ubuntu is a really good Linux distribution for newbies, and is great for desktop PCs.
If you are looking to setup servers then you could also try the server version of Ubuntu, or look at other distros such as CentOS, Debian (which Ubuntu is based on)
