Yes it is legal. If you want to own a pet snake then I recommend an Australian carpet python. It is very easy to get a license (permit) and they make great pets.
They are very docile and placid. You only need to get a "special" permit if you want to keep venemous snakes, but I don't recommend that for a beginner.

Hey. You can have some snakes as pets in Australia but you must have a permit. In my oppinion I think that a python will be fine, good luck :)
