Anyone travelled to Samoa?
Hi, thinking of travelling around the Pacific area in the summer (which would be the wet season there, but oh well).
Has anyone been to Samoa, what's it like? Is it cheap, I will most likely on a tight budget and also backpacking as much as possible.

I spent 3 months travelling the Pacific area. Places I went to included Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Samoa.
This was in 2005, but I doubt things have changed too much in Samoa since then. Here are my impressions:
Samoa is not (yet) very touristy. It's not like Fiji which has a huge tourist industry. So if you are after a cheap backpacking experience, it is great. Personally I'm not a big fan of those expensive "tropical resort" style places so Samoa is great if you want to holiday on the cheap.
Samoa is still quite traditional, it's a bit like going back in time a bit, but it is modernising quickly now since more tourists are going there. It is a very beautiful bunch of islands and you can stay on beach "fales" which are right on the beach and still very inexpensive.
I highly recommend travelling to Samoa if you want an authentic (well as authentic as it can be) Pacific experience that is affordable. Cheers.
